Mid-July, the meeting of the United Nations central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, also known as the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), took place. It has been a special edition for the yearly HPLF summit as the Covid-19 pandemic has been taking over all of our lives for more than a year now and will inevitably have an impact on the achievement of the 2030 SDGs. In the light of this summit, the DCT will be holding a webinar on the impact and possible implications of Covid-19 for the SDG implementation in the EU and globally.

The 30th of June at 4 p.m. CET time, we are honored to welcome Ms. Sylvia Beales, MEP Udo Bullman, Dr. Lara-Zuzan Golesorkhi and MEP Tomas Tobé who will each share their expertise on the topic and discuss the impact of the pandemic on the different sustainability goals and aspects of European and global sustainable development.

To start off the discussion, our first speaker, Ms. Sylvia Beales will be talking about the impact and implications of Covid-19 for the ‘Leave No one Behind Principle’ of SDG implementation in the EU and globally. She will focus on the Goals under review at the HPLF, namely Goals 1, 3, 8, 10, 13, 16 and 17. Secondly, MEP Bullmann will zoom in on SDG 10, reduced inequalities, and how the pandemic worsens the divide in and between societies. Thirdly, Dr. Golesorkhi will be presenting findings from her ethnographic research on the impacts of COVID-19 on refugee women’s livelihoods in Portland, Oregon (USA). She will situate these findings in broader global dynamics regarding migration-gender relations and present her NGO’s (CMGJ) Spotlight Project ‘Migration, Gender, and COVID-19’). To conclude, MEP Tobé will focus on youth in developing countries, and the risk of it being a lost generation due to the hard impact of the pandemic, which is linked to job opportunities, growth and equality.

The event will be moderated by Florence Van den Bergh, our Advocacy Officer at DCT.
